Description
The CalExotics Southern Lights is a silicone anal plug with 10 vibration, pulsing and escalating modes; the first switches on the lights only. It measures 30.5 cm in total length, with 11.5 cm insertable length and a 4.5 cm diameter; it has a tapered shape and a flared base. The lights sync with the vibrations, and you can recharge it via USB.
Who it suits and who it doesn't
If you’re as interested in the lights as you are in vibration, you can leave it on the first mode, which only lights up, or choose one of the modes with lights synchronised to the vibrations. If you’re taking it travelling, it has a travel lock and remembers the last mode you used.
It’s not the usual choice for your first anal toy: at 4.5 cm in diameter, you’ll generally want to start with something narrower.
How to use it and look after it
- Choose a mode bearing in mind that the first one only switches on the lights.
- To switch the travel lock on or off, press and hold the control for 3 seconds.
Charge it via USB for 2 hours using the cable provided.
Compatibility
- Lubricant: As it’s made of silicone, the general rule is to use water-based lubricant: silicone-based lubricant can damage its surface.
- Charging: It has a rechargeable USB battery and comes with a charging cable.
General tips
Common good practice for this type of product; these are not the manufacturer's instructions.
- The anus doesn't lubricate itself: use plenty of lube and add more as soon as you feel any friction.
- Start slowly with your body relaxed, breathing deeply as you insert it. If you feel pain, stop: anal play should never be forced.
- Given its diameter, it isn't the best choice as a first anal toy: the usual approach is to start with a narrower one and work up in size gradually.
- Don't move it from the anus to the vagina without washing it first, or change the condom covering it.
- To remove it, pull gently on the base and take your time; a little more lube helps.
- The first few times, wear it only briefly and gradually increase the time as you feel comfortable.
- Start at the lowest intensity and work up gradually: that way you'll find the rhythm you like sooner.
How it differs
- Pipedream Remote Control Silicone Plug: If you want more insertable length, the CalExotics Southern Lights offers 11.5 cm compared with 9.7 cm for the Pipedream Remote Control Silicone Plug; if you’d prefer a smaller diameter, the Pipedream has a maximum diameter of 4.1 cm compared with the Southern Lights’ 4.5 cm.
Our verdict
The lights-only mode lets you use the lights without vibration; at high speed, you can expect 40 minutes of battery life.
Before first use, read the manufacturer's instructions that come with the product: they are the reference for its use, cleaning and safety.
